Leeds Neuroscientist awarded International PhD prize
A recent University of Leeds PhD student graduate, Madeleine Gilbert, has been awarded the UZH-Foundation Brain Diseases Award 2025. This is an international prize recognising PhD student contributions to understanding and treating conditions including Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, Huntington's, and other neurological diseases. Madeleine undertook an MRC DiMeN DTP-funded PhD project in the Faculty of Biological Sciences (Astbury Centre and School of Biomedical Sciences), investigating the in situ structure of Alzheimer’s disease pathology in Dr René Frank’s group and co-supervised by Prof Sheena Radford. Madeleine, together with Nayab Fatima, Joshua Jenkins, and Tom O’Sullivan, co-led a groundbreaking study reporting the in-tissue structure and 3D molecular architecture of Alzheimer’s disease pathology within post-mortem human brain.
