Leeds researchers awarded £0.95M to study neurovascular disease

René Frank and ECR Maddie Gilbert, leading a project in collaboration with Ryan Mathew and Sheena Radford at the University of Leeds, have been awarded £950,000 by the MRC to investigate the blood-brain barrier and neurovascular disease. The neurovascular unit that forms the blood-brain barrier (BBB) is a strictly controlled gateway mediating the entry of essential nutrients and the removal of waste and toxins, including β-amyloid. The BBB is also a particular challenge for treating neurological diseases because it blocks or limits the uptake of therapeutics. In collaboration with academic clinicians and bench scientists, we will uncover the structural basis of BBB function and dysfunction in neurovascular disease.
